HR-GaAs:Cr sensor material

HR-GaAs:Cr is high-resistivity gallium arsenide compensated with chromium. It converts X-ray photons directly into electric charge at room temperature and is the base of every Zeelta sensor. Our internal name for the material is “TOP”.

True Color X-ray
HR-GaAs:Cr is the material behind True Color X-ray.

What it is

The material is produced from semi-insulating monocrystalline GaAs compensated with chromium and processed into high-resistivity plates. The plates are the basic component for pixelated, energy-resolving sensors of different sizes.

Why it matters

Spectral photon counting needs a direct-conversion semiconductor. CdTe and CdZnTe work, but they are expensive and are limited to small tiles. HR-GaAs:Cr offers comparable spectral performance with better response uniformity, scalable production and a much lower cost per gram.

Advantages

  • Better spectral performance and response uniformity than common alternatives
  • Scalable production process
  • Large detector areas suitable for medical imaging
  • Available to early adopters, research groups and detector manufacturers
